Cycle hire schemes

We had a look at the planned TFL docking bays for their cycle hire schemes for the Oval, Kennington and Vauxhall area at the consultation session at Lilian Baylis School on Kennington Lane last night.

It looks like a great idea - getting more people to cycle and will help relieve pressure on public transport.

We are concerned about the planned site on Windmill Row near Kennington Cross. We think that it will not be suitable due to a lack of space.

While we always want to encourage alternatives to the car, this site would mean the loss of 3 short term parking bays in an area where there is very little parking, difficult for those who have to use their cars more such as disabled people, and would be concerned at the possible effect on local businesses in the Kennington Cross area.

There are other alternative sites being considered around Kennington Lane for the cycle bays which may prove more suitable.

And in another part of the ward, near to the South Lambeth Library, we have been calling for TFL to consider putting in a set of cycle hire bays there as well, near to where Wilcox Close meets South Lambeth Road.

We look forward to hearing any other comments from local residents about what they think of the plans.
